Sumner County at the Frist Center!

This past weekend we had the reception for our amazing Sumner County students at the Frist Center of Visual Arts in Nashville. It was packed with families and friends of our tiny artists from 20 schools around Sumner County. Thank you so much to everyone who participated, Andy Daniels from Sumner County Schools BOA and to the Frist Center for hosting us. You've made these upcoming artists feel so important!

Needle Felting with Cassie Stephens

I went to a workshop at the Frist Center last weekend to learn how to needle felt with Cassie Stephens. If you haven't seen her blog, Cassie Stephens, you should check it out. 

Apparently, needle felting is the easiest thing to do ever. I made a postcard, a pencil pouch, and a pin. 

I would recommend any workshop by her. Can't wait for the next one!

Paper Making for $3.25

I made this set up for my Recycled Bowl art lesson at Camp STEM this summer. 

The frame is an embroidery hoop with a sheet of felt as a filter.

Each set also has two plastic circles with holes. I have no idea what these are called, but I found them next to the embroidery hoops for super cheap and they are perfect for shaping and removing paper.

Here are some finished examples using this set up from the second session of Paper Power at Summer Art Camp at the Frist Center.

Origami Radial Design

Kids at the first week of Summer Art Camp at the Frist Center really loved the small origami projects I had for early finishers, so I decided to make it an actual project for the second week. I was inspired by the projects I saw at Art. Paper. Scissors. Glue! They also have a great tutorial for simple folds.

I taught them a couple of basic folds and encouraged them to try their own as well. We practiced with white paper first them moved to color paper. Beautiful results and they were engaged the whole time!

Art of Craft: Initial Stamp Design

We used out initial stamps cut from linoleum to sign out artworks throughout the week. We also made a simple design to showcase them. The kids got their choice of colored paper and colored ink to create a simple, quick design. 

Paper Power: Stop-Motion Animation

This camp was all about the potential of paper as an art tool. I had never done Stop-Motion Animation (SMA) before and I was terrified that we wouldn't finish on time. BUT I did not know that I was working with one of the best groups of 8-10 year olds around. ^_^

We used a hole in the table to film through onto the floor. It worked great!

We spent the first day designing movable characters with brass brads and paper. They also made stationary background characters and scenery and figured out a script. 

Planning was so important! We had to plan for at least 1 hour before we were allowed to start working.
