This Week in Art 5

During the second week of our Greek Art unit, we continued our projects by adding more detail and construction paper mache sculptures.

1st grade painted over their oil pastels for the second step of their scratch art paper.

Using crayon in the back before painting to make a crayon resist.
2nd grade painted a paper to be the background of their Parthenon collage.

3rd grade continued adding tiles to their Greek Mosaics.

4th grade constructed and paper mached their Greek vases.

5th grade added paper mache to their mask forms for their Greek theatre masks.

Finishing these next week!

This Week In Art 4

The benefits of having your own porch, right?

This week in art we began our Greek Art unit! This kids are very excited about this one, they recognize so many of the artworks and buildings we've been looking at.

1st grade is creating a Greek vase using scratch art. This week we used oil pastels to color the base of our scratch art paper using either red, orange, or black pastels.

2nd grade is making a Parthenon collage using marbled paper. This week we used shaving cream to create a sheet of marbled paper that we can cut into our Parthenon shapes.

3rd grade is creating Greek mosaics using paper scraps.

4th grade is making paper mache Greek vases. This week we watched videos on paper mache and sketched out what we wanted our vases to look like. It was important to make notes about what each feature would be made out of so that we could get right to work next week!

5th grade is creating Greek theater masks. We looked at Greek theater buildings and many mask examples. I wish I could find a good Greek theater performance video for them, but I can't find anything! Recommendations? We sketched out our ideas so that we can get started right away next week!

This Week in Art 2

Kindergarten practiced writing their names and creating crayon resist with rainbow names (and of course I got no pictures of that!)

1st grade used foam brushes to mix black and white to create gray stones for their stonehenge paintings (...and no pictures there either. Kindergarten and 1st are a handful. I'll work on getting some in-progress pictures from them.)

2nd grade cut prehistoric shapes from their beautiful painted papers (almost a shame to cut them up) to add to their cave backgrounds.

3rd grade used natural colors to paint their clay carvings.

4th grade added metal to their yarn collages and glued them to their stamped backgrounds.

5th grade added dots to their aboriginal dot paintings.

As we finish up our Prehistoric Art unit (so fast already?!) check back for in-depth lessons and processes of each project. :)

This Week in Art

Kindergarten got an intro to art by creating Art Books. We practiced lines, shapes, and basic pictures. They had fun and I got to see what they can do.

1st grade began work on the backgrounds for their Stonehenge paintings. We practiced value by painting lights and darks to create a "moon in the night" effect. Next week we'll add our Stonehenge with foam brushes.

2nd grade used various painted paper techniques to create cave-inspired papers. Next week, we'll learn how to draw some basic cave art images and cut these into shapes to create a collage.

How awesome are these wire racks I found in surplus? Perfect for 3D drying.
3rd grade began work on their cave carvings. They were so excited to get to do clay in their second week of school!
4th grade created collages of Meath Spiral designs. Next week, we'll add metal sheets over these to create a relief sculpture. You can see some of those on the left side of the rack.

5th grade began the background of their Aboriginal Dot Paintings with black and white patterns. Next week we add dots!

I am very happy with these kids so far! Guild is a spectacular school! :)
